Small vessels made of fiberglass

As a basic material, used for hull fabrication in ship engineering, fiberglass plastic on the basis of unsaturated polyester resins of cold curing grade are used. Various grades of fiberglass fabrics and fiberglass mat are used as reinforcing material. The introduction of reinforcing, i.e. glass fiber-based materials gives the polyester resins a very high strength. In order to induce curing of polyester resin, the polymerization process must be activated. Various initiators are used for this purpose. Polyester resin is polymerized without heating by adding a gas pedal, which is dependent on the initiator used. The initiators and gas pedals are added one by one with careful mixing of each additive.

FRP Hull Construction

The outer skin of a plastic ship, unlike metal and wood skin, is made of glass cloth, fiberglass mat or glass rope in a monolithic molding process.

There are two considerations for making outer plies of glass cloth: to make the outer plies more resistant to bending and to improve the appearance of the outer surfaces.

The determining factors in choosing one or another type of cladding are, on the one hand, the required strength, and on the other hand, the laboriousness of making the hull. The cost of the material, which is a significant component of the cost of hull fabrication, also has a great influence. Increasing the thickness of the plating in places where it is necessary for constructive reasons is made by increasing the number of layers of glass filler laid in that place during molding. The outer decorative layer is injected with pigments which are used to color the outer sheath in the desired color.

One-layer fiberglass cladding is widely used at ship length up to 15-20 m. The set used on vessels with plastic hulls is quite diverse by design. The following types of kit are the most rational at individual method of production: U-shaped kit with foil molding, U-shaped kit with foam molding, wooden kit laminated with fiberglass.
